On Tuesday, November 5th, the USA will be electing the 47th President
of the United States.
During the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, my recollection of presidential election
years were more fun and had the collective excitement akin to the
Super Bowl. Election parties seemed to be as popular as Super Bowls
and members from both groups could gather under the same roof.
We are in a new era where politics are painfully dividing families and
friendships. My football roots are Minnesota Vikings, but I don’t dislike
people who cheer for the Green Bay Packers or Detroit Lions. This
mentality sounds absurd, but so would political opposition just a few
decades ago.
Division, dislike and hatred are emotions generated by our spiritual
enemy. The prince of lies is gaining momentum in our world and our
political environment. It appears that there are people in politics and in
media that thrives off telling lies. The pol (prince of lies) has such
influence that it seems some enjoy believing the lies. There are current
issues that are blatantly false, but loyalists stay within their tribes (i.e.,
political parties) and further defend the false propaganda.
Anyone who follows politics agrees that this political season is the
darkest and most uncivil ever. Unlike a Super Bowl party, no longer can
Americans host election parties light heartedly.
As our society continues to promote division, hate, fear and chaos, it’s
easy to retaliate and defend our own tribe. This is the natural response
of humans. But if we live SMOL (live as if we have Six Months or Less
to Live), we need to ignore all of the distractions fueled by the enemy.
Yes, we do our part and vote. But after that, we live SMOL. We need
not be anxious about the election or any other worldly crisis. Philippians
4: 6-7. “Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer
and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to
God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep
your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
On Tuesday, November 5th (Election Day), rest in our Lord Jesus Christ
and give thanks for our many blessings. It’s another day the Lord has
given us to draw closer to him. Our thoughts and concerns should not
be on election day but on our judgement day. Our only worry should be
about our mission to become Saints and encourage as many others as
possible to join the party there.
Don’t live small, #LIVE SMOL.
